EXPERIENCE 404: PARK(ING) DAY

RECLAIMING STREETS FOR PEOPLE

ABOUT

Park(ing) Day is a global participatory event where communities temporarily transform parking spaces into pedestrian-focused green spaces or social environments, demonstrating how streets can become safer, greener, and more people-centered. The event invites residents to reimagine public space as people-centered rather than transportation-centric.

Our team has delivered two successful Park(ing) Day demonstrations. The second transformed 60 feet of parking into a wellness-focused, meditative green space and partnered with nearby restaurants to convert 40 feet into on-street dining. We successfully engaged over 100 people, teaching through experiential demonstration the importance of human-centered urban design and inspiring long-term advocacy for people-focused public spaces.

WHY IT MATTERS

Reclaiming street space for people is essential to building a safer, healthier, and more equitable city. By transforming curbside areas into pedestrian-focused green spaces and social environments, the project educates residents on sustainable urban design, supports local businesses, and fosters community through on-site engagement. Experiencing these spaces firsthand allows participants to see the benefits of prioritizing pedestrians over vehicles, envision streets designed for people first, and promotes both economic and social vitality while inspiring long-term advocacy for human-centered public spaces.
