EXPERIENCE 404: 404 DAY

ABOUT

On 404 Day, Atlantans gather in various places around the City for fun and games related to the music, art, history, food, etc. that embody the City as we know it. This past year, members of the Dept. of City Planning’s Office of Design, constructed large MDF cutouts of the numbers 4,0,4 positioned along the street in front of the Atlanta City Studio. We encouraged people to engage by adding a brush stroke (or two, or three!) to our canvas. This small act of collaboration emphasized how much we each contribute to the portrait of our City in our own unique way.

WHY IT MATTERS

April 4th has become an unofficial day to celebrate the City of Atlanta, recognizing its culture, creativity, and collective identity. Activating public space on this day reinforces a core design approach of Our Future City - Design for People and Design for Public Life. Culture is shaped by community, and that cultural expression becomes visible through design-led placemaking. Placemaking supports public life by prioritizing the experiences and needs of pedestrians. Our 404 Day demonstrations offer a temporary expression of community pride and illustrates how visible public spaces can be designed to celebrate Atlanta’s cultural life.
