PEACHTREE STREET STREETSCAPE

ABOUT

The future of downtown Atlanta depends in part on a thriving, bustling, and interesting Peachtree Street. Every city in the South is working to make its downtown a successful urban place. This requires a signature street of great quality. For downtown to continue to attract people to live, work, and visit, Peachtree Street must become a more vital street. This is where the competition is being waged among cities for growth and prosperity. Peachtree Street from North Avenue to Marietta Street is approximately 1.25 miles. A vibrant Peachtree Street in this area includes residential use, ground-floor retail and service, engaging public spaces, and a street that is safe for pedestrian, bike, transit, and vehicle traffic. This is the densest, most active, and most transit-accessible street in the City of Atlanta.

For planning and design purposes, there are three segments of the street. The overall vision of this project is to improve the entire length of Peachtree Street from Marietta Street to North Avenue. To implement that vision, preliminary engineering (PE) work would be completed for Segment 1 (from Ellis Street to Baker Street) and Segment 2 (from Marietta Street to Ellis Street). Segment 1 will focus on the pedestrian, bike, and vehicle safety of the bustling heart of Peachtree Center, while segment 2 focuses on connecting that energy and activity to Five Points, Fairlie Poplar and Georgia State University. This work is critical for the economic life of the street and Downtown. In the future, Segment 3 (from Baker Street to North Avenue) could extend this energy and vitality north to Midtown.

Ultimately, redesigning Peachtree Street signifies more than just a streetscape; it is a catalyst for a dynamic, thriving downtown Atlanta - a captivating urban realm that welcomes residents, visitors, and businesses alike. As we reimagine the city’s principal street, we forge a path to a future where Peachtree Street stands as a testament to Atlanta’s unwavering commitment to progress, ambition, and transformative urban design. Our streets make up Atlanta’s largest public space, and Atlantans should love their public spaces. Transforming Atlanta’s streets to better serve people over cars is essential to building the kind of city we aspire to become - the Beloved Community.

CITY DESIGN CORE VALUES

All Office of Design initiatives incorporate at least one of the Atlanta City Design core values.

GOALS

Revitalizing Peachtree Street as a Vibrant Urban Corridor

The primary goal is to transform Peachtree Street into a lively and attractive urban corridor in downtown Atlanta. This involves creating a dynamic streetscape with a mix of residential, retail, and service spaces, as well as engaging public areas that promote a thriving and bustling atmosphere. The aim is to make Peachtree Street a signature street of great quality, encouraging people to live, work, and visit the area.

Enhancing Safety and Accessibility for All Users

Another key objective is to improve safety and accessibility along Peachtree Street for pedestrians, cyclists, transit users, and vehicles. By implementing traffic calming measures, installing pedestrian hybrid beacons, enhancing crosswalk visibility, and exploring the possibility of reducing speed limits, the project seeks to create a street that is safe and accommodating for all types of transportation.

Fostering a Sense of Community and Beloved Urban Spaces

The project aims to create a sense of community and belonging by reimagining Peachtree Street as a beloved urban space. By engaging various stakeholders, including residents, businesses, and community organizations, the design process involves incorporating their input and reflecting the aspirations of Atlanta’s residents. The goal is to establish Peachtree Street as a testament to the city’s commitment to progress, transformative urban design, and a place that Atlantans can love and enjoy as a vibrant public space.
